Sources of Solar Power

There are solely two sources of solar power generation, either directly through Photovoltaics (PV) or indirectly using CSP(Concentrated Solar Power) or a combination of both.

Organizations such as the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) are aiding the regional solar sector of US.

SEIA is a national non-profit association of the solar energy industry in the United States that supports free and fair trading of solar equipment. To encourage local production, the government has set 30% tax on solar panels and PV cells imported to the US.


Though US is witnessing such a huge growth in the solar power sector, it is still second to China.

China is the world’s largest market for both photovoltaics and solar thermal energy and is home to several massive solar farms including the world’s largest in the Tengger Desert in China.

It also remains the world’s largest manufacturer of solar panel technology too. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), China contributes more than 60% of the world’s solar panels production.

The matrix shows China’s annual PV installations will hit 370GWdc which is more than double that of the United States.

China’s growth is contributed by the unconstrained solar energy consumption by rapidly developing population and appreciation through government tariffs.

China’s numbers are breathtaking but it is likely to be overtaken by India in the not-too-distant future.


India currently stands 3rd in annual PV installations, not far behind the US. India is gaining pace through policy changes that support the solar market in India and is expected to become the leader in the solar power consumption in upcoming years.

Challenges in Solar Power Industry

1. Unpredictable Weather Conditions

For smooth operation of PV solar farms availability of sunshine has to be continuous. You never know when a cloud will cover the sun and for how long will it stay. Unpredictable weather changes hit the solar farm’s efficiency and its operation badly.

2. Lower Efficiency

Though we are dealing with completely renewable energy resource efficiency is the matter to be focused. The average efficiency of PV solar panels falls between 15 to 18 per cent. The maximum it can go is 20 per cent. That means the panels are able to convert only 15 to 18 per cent of sunshine falling on them into electricity.

3. Solar Industry Has its Cycles

There are companies which struggled to find grip in the market and filed for bankruptcy in recent years. SolarWorld, the European manufacturer of solar panels that had one of the largest manufacturing plants in the U.S., filed for insolvency. This follows Suniva's bankruptcy in April 2017.

This was just in the US. There are many companies worldwide which are finding it difficult to sustain in tough market conditions.

4. High Installation Costs

As per domestic and local consumption, solar farms have to be of at least 1-megawatt capacity, which is capable of supplying electricity to 200 households.

Although the cost per solar installation is based on several factors, such as sunlight availability hours and location, the cost of installation usually falls around $1/watt which when converted costs around $1 million for a solar farm of 1-megawatt capacity.

Considering efficiency and adaptability, the installation cost of a solar farm is still costly and needs to come down for smooth operation and better maintenance in the long run.

5. Land Availability & Acquisition Challenges

Solar farms require a huge investment both in land acquisition and its installation. Not every country affords huge lands available solitary with lots of sunshine. This is one of the major challenges both countries and firms need to deal with.

6. Dependency on Export Market

Manufacturers in developing nations are mostly dependent on export markets, suppliers have tie-ups with manufacturers in the US, Europe and China thereby increasing exports demand which results in reduced supplies for the growing domestic market.

7. Unsupportive Government Policies

The lack of industry-government cooperation for the technology and its adaption from start to finish decelerates scaling. Government policies need to be more industry-friendly.

8. Lack of Trained Human Resources

Despite the dramatic shift of society towards the renewable resource, the nations are lacking training, skills and development of human resources to drive the industry growth and PV adoption.

9. Lack of Consumer Awareness

The consumer response and adaptability to the solar power industry and its products are impressive but the world is still lacking behind from its complete monopoly. There is a need to build consumer awareness in every about the technology, its economics and right usage in day to day lives.

10. Huge Maintenance Costs

Apart from the installation of solar panels in solar farms, maintenance of the whole farm and its operation is a great deal of financing. Maintenance of solar farms includes cleanliness, electrical faults, replacement of batteries in off-grid plants, and continuity of the farm’s operation. Maintenance of the solar farm is a bit costly keeping the smaller grid efficiency in electricity production in consideration.
